It has come to my attention that many Dell 400SC motherboards produced around 2003-2004 used faulty capacitors near the CPU heatsink causing the board to be unstable after 8-24 months of use. The problem appears to be similar to the big 2001-2002 bad cap issue, except in this case the boards/caps are much newer and thus should not have this problem. It has been postulated that it was simply an unlucky bad batch of caps in this case.
The caps that failed are Nichicon brand, which is very strange as Nichi's are usually very reliable and I have never seen them fail in any other board. In this case the problem must be due to some bad batch issue. For this specific board issue we will use only Panasonic brand capacitors as the replacments. If someone has any further information regarding the Nichicons, please email me.
Tecnopolis offers repair services for this system and its specific bad cap problem. We stock the correct low impedance low value capacitors required to complete the repair. We also can sell the bare caps to DIY'ers. For both cases, please see our main badcap page.
